This is a rant about adolescence the awful 4 episode limited series on Netflix. it’s fiction first of all. I have to say I couldn’t stomach to watch the full length of the last episode because this show is so terribly put together. I’m sure it meant something but I don’t care. The thing I want to talk about is the pacing, cinematography, and how the dialogue is set up. . Btw spoilers but it’s so bad I don’t recommend watching it.

The first episode has two locations, the second episode has barely 2 locations, and the third episode has one. Each episode is almost an hour long (I’ve wasted so much time). Each episode is shot in one long cut. That’s right guys an hour long uninterrupted cut 4 times in a row. It’s mind blowingly BORING, I don’t care to watch some pigs run down a hallway for 30 fucking seconds. The color of the filming is nothing special, just muted colors. Point is, there’s nothing special about this TV series. It’s not a drama, it’s not an action, it’s a boring fictional slice of life. So why the hour long cuts? Just to prove that you can put together something boring with a difficult technical set? It’s not impactful so why use something that makes the pacing seem so irritating?
The first episode takes place at the house of Jamie. The camera follows the lead detective of the case but the camera will follow other people around whenever they want. Mainly other pigs or Jamie’s legal team. It’s very unhinged the way the camera switches off the follow another person. Jamie is arrested and taken to the police station under the suspicion of murder. He definitely did it btw. It’s all fictional but Jamie the character definitely killed a girl on camera. He was held in a cell, given a physical search, and then questioned. That’s it. That’s the episode. Did that have to be an hour long with no cuts??
The second episode is no better but the terrible British children start fighting. The camera follows several different people just like in the first episode and the location stays around or near the school. The pigs question other children, pigs get one boy to spill that he gave Jamie the knife to kill the girl.
The third episode is the most boring because the camera follows one woman psychologist who questions the boy in a “behavior training” facility again very boring
The last episode I managed to get up till the family of the boy goes on a car trip but it’s the same one long cut just like the other episodes.
None of the episodes actually connect and they also give little to no context. I’m pretty sure there’s only 3 songs throughout the whole course of the show. Not repeating music! just one song and then only dialogue. I watched it with captions and the captions pointed out when there’s tense silence but there’s ALWAYS long silence in between dialogue.
I’m going to draw the comparison of this over hyped show about mental health to another.
13 reasons why had better cinematography than this horrible British slop. 13 reasons is still an awful show but at least it kept the attention to go 4 train wreck seasons. The reason I make the comparison of these two shows is also the outside impact it’s having on nomies. 13 reasons started as “how to have a hard conversation” but it’s really just glorified revenge suicide. It’s the same with Adolescence People are making it out to be “a hard conversation about youth media” and blaming it on the young. Who is responsible for what children consume? Who’s responsibility is it when children are bullying each other? Who’s responsible if your child feels isolated and seeks attention online? Of course, let’s blame the internet.
Ok that’s enough brain leak for now. If anyone has any commentary on this show I’d love to discuss farther
