Mainline games I prefer Sonic, for the spinoffs I think Mario is better even if the new sports titles are shit. You should really play the Paper Mario original trilogy if you haven't those games are amazing.

I like them both, but the Mario games are more solid. They're both revolutionary games.

When it comes to characters, plot, world building, aesthetic, etc, I prefer Sonic no contest.

But when it comes to gameplay, replayability, and quality, Mario completely clears.
