The RATMAN of Southend
There is an urban legend about a spirit that haunts a tunnel in the town of Southend. The first version of the tale is about a homeless man who ran inside a tunnel to get away from the rain. A group of drunken teenagers decided to steal his blanket and beat him up. Later that night, hungry rats swarmed his body and ate the flesh off his face. Sightings of a homeless man without a face have been reported.
In the second version of the legend, the mayor of that town was known to be a notorious cheater. As a result, his child was doomed to be born as a half rat, half human creature. The mayor built the underpass, so that his child can hide during the day.
Some say the Rat Man still haunts the underpass 'til this very day. He would appear at night to scare away visitors. Neighbors say that squealing and scraping noises can be heard throughout the tunnel at night. There is a real-life incident that is connected to the Rat Man legend. A homeless man was stabbed to death in another tunnel in the same town. Now this tunnel is reputed to be haunted by a homeless man and a little boy.
